The Story Behind Shepherd Homes: Building a Legacy of Craftsmanship and Inclusion in Geelong
A Personal Reflection by Martin Roundfield – Founder of Shepherd Homes
Shepherd Homes didn’t begin with a business plan or a bold marketing campaign. It began with a belief—that the residential construction industry could be more inclusive, more caring, and more purpose-driven. That renovating and extending homes in Geelong and surrounding areas could be about more than materials. It could be about people.
I founded Shepherd Homes in late 2018, while still working as a construction manager for a local architectural builder. By early 2019, it had become my full-time focus. My vision was clear: to do more for our clients, for tradespeople, and for our community. I wanted to create a construction business in Geelong that didn’t just deliver high-quality home renovations and extensions, but also helped shepherd people—especially from underrepresented groups—into lifelong careers in the building industry.
A Love for Heritage Homes and Complex Renovations
I’ve always had a personal passion for heritage homes—their history, their quirks, and the craftsmanship they demand. At Shepherd Homes, we specialise in home renovations and custom extensions that breathe new life into older homes throughout Geelong and regional Victoria. These aren’t cookie-cutter builds—they’re tailored projects that require thoughtful planning, respect for tradition, and a high standard of detail.
A Different Approach to Building
From the outset, Shepherd Homes has been about more than just quality construction. We exist to provide opportunity and create lasting change in the local industry. Our team champions inclusive employment in the trades, particularly by creating supported entry pathways for women and disadvantaged individuals across Geelong.
This is not a tick-box exercise—it’s about building a culture where different life experiences are valued, and where growth and mentorship are part of the job. Through our hands-on renovation projects and home extensions, we train apprentices in real-world conditions, ensuring every build contributes to a broader social impact.
Craftsmanship Meets Community
We cut our teeth on small projects—custom alfresco areas and thoughtful heritage restorations. Then came our first major extension projects: a 108-year-old semi-detached home in Newtown, and a weatherboard in Geelong West. These confirmed our purpose: to combine traditional building techniques with a focus on social impact and career development.
These character-filled homes provided ideal settings for on-site learning. They allowed our team—especially our apprentices—to gain deep knowledge through meaningful work. Every detail mattered, from the structural planning to the final finishes.
Training the Next Generation of Builders in Geelong
One of the defining aspects of Shepherd Homes is our focus on apprentice development. A standout example is Nyah, who joined us during the unpredictable COVID period. Her commitment and growth were inspiring—not only did her confidence soar, but her progress helped shape the inclusive direction of our business.
Today, we continue to work with exceptional apprentices, including Max, Sam (now fully qualified), and Talia. Their skills, passion, and attention to detail keep us evolving and improving every day.
We’ve also partnered with a local apprenticeship group to provide real-world, on-site experience for over a dozen young women each year—right here in Geelong. It’s a small step toward building a more equitable future in construction.
Where Shepherd Homes Stands Today
Today, Shepherd Homes is a trusted name in home renovation and extension services across Geelong, Victoria. We take a building science-led approach—prioritising health, energy efficiency, and sustainability with every project. Our clients trust us for our communication, our care, and our unwavering commitment to detail.
Whether we're restoring an Edwardian home, creating a custom extension for a growing family, or upgrading living spaces for better comfort and function, we do it with pride and purpose.
More Than Homes—It’s About People
For me, the real joy lies in mentorship—in helping someone uncover their passion and skill. Every person who joins our team brings a unique story, and every project we complete tells one of its own.
At Shepherd Homes, we believe that renovating and extending homes in Geelong can—and should—be about legacy. One home, one career, one life at a time.
