Most renovations tackle the building in pieces - new insulation here, flashy stone benchtop there, a heat pump maybe, double glazing when the budget allows.
A deep energy retrofit goes further.
It upgrades the thermal envelope of the whole home. That means addressing the ceiling, subfloor, walls, windows, airtightness, and ventilation as a connected system, not as individual products installed in sequence.
The word deep is specific. It refers to the scale of energy reduction achieved - typically 75 to 90 percent in well-executed projects - and the level of diagnostic work and technical expertise required to get there. It is not insulation, a heat pump and solar panels. It is a complete rethinking of how the building manages heat, air, and moisture, and installs deliberate controls for these to protect your health, protect your home, protect your investment and reduce energy costs
It also means avoiding one carbon cost and reducing another: retrofitting reuses the existing structure rather than demolishing and rebuilding, avoiding the embodied carbon of new construction, while the fabric-first approach at its centre lowers the home's operational carbon — the ongoing energy needed to heat and cool it — for the life of the building.

A deep energy retrofit is a whole-of-home strategy — but it isn't the only place to start. A Home Energy Upgrade takes the same building-science approach and applies it to a smaller, more immediate scope: sealing the worst draughts, insulating the ceiling, fixing the biggest sources of heat loss.
